Film Review: Cocoon: the Return

It was three years before this sequel to the hit COCOON hit multiplexes. What took it so long? Well, frankly, how do you or can you top the original? It was really a self contained story, or was it? The most remarkable aspect of the original film is that the Antareans never completed their mission therefore in this film they return in order to finally finish removing their kind from the ocean floor before they are discovered by mankind.
The whole cast returns in COCOON: THE RETURN now directed by Daniel Petrie whose most notable film prior to this was the made for TV SYBIL. Although the script by Stephen McPherson hinted at the magic that was present in David Saperstein (story) and Tom Benedek’s screenplay for the original film, this one never rises above being a shallow carbon copy and erases much of what was accomplished in the first one.
It is entertaining nevertheless as relationships are expanded upon and the theme of what it is to be “human” is at the forefront. This film missteps in its attempt to focus on individual storylines rather than use the elderly cast members as a group like in the original because not all storylines are given equal screen time and with a cast this huge something is sacrificed. Still, the film is far better than most other films of the time and is not one that should be casually glanced upon.
